Chapter 12
Listless he turned yet another page. Occlumency was boring. And he really had no use for it. Not many wizards were interested to learn how to cast a Legilimens surreptitiously. So he would notice if someone was going to read his mind. Granted he then mostly didn't know what to do, but if he did the same as he does with the Impiriuscurse. That ought to work.
He tried to stay uninterested, because he was afraid of getting his hopes up. What if that all was not real? What if Malfoy never had showed up? What if he was delusional after all?
The fact that Theo had removed whatever magic he had put around him did nothing for his fears. So maybe his own magic was no longer deemed the cause of all that had happened. Never trusting yourself and your own mind, that was the hell he was living in.
"Wonders never scease. You are actually doing as told."
With a loud thud he shut the book, s Malfoy once again leaned against the wall.
"It's not like the provide me with Quidditch Quaterly in here. I was bored. Doubt I can even remember what I read," he huffed.
The mere sight of Malfoy got him aggregated. How the bastard? First he vanishes from the face of the earth. And now he is back, to once again witness when everything falls apart for him.
"I'm sure they have their reasons, for taking away what seems to be your sole source of entertainment." Malfoy rolled his eyes at him.
"They took it away because I would have burned it down. So yes, they had their reasons. What is it you came here for exactly? Seeing as you must know that I will not have learned any Occlumency yet;" he huffed, pushing the book of his bed.
"You did read the book, right?"
Malfoy asked. The bastard had not even flinched when the book dropped, but he had watched it fall.
"Yes," he growled.
"And you understood the principals of it?"
"I'm not stupid, even if you want to imply that. Yes the principals are to stay focused and in control, and then compartmentalise and some sort of visualisation of a kind of wall," he replied, crossing his arms in front of him, starring at Malfoy.
"Then get your coat." Malfoy replied and moved to the door.
"Are you fucking with me? I can't go out there. I am dangerous to everybody including myself. You of all people must be interested to stay out of harm's way!" he shouted because he was mocked again.
And then it came to him.
This was a delusion. Of course it was. His mind wanted him to go outside so it could do real damage. Why had he not seen it sooner?
"Potter. Potter listen to me-"
"No, I don't have to. You are not real, you just want me to bring danger to everybody. I will stay right here, and watch you while you close the door from the outside and leave me alone. Like you did after the war. You ferreted coward!" He stated with some satisfaction, and leand back more comfortably in the bed, staying put.
He didn't even bother to hide his snort when Malfoy froze before the door, watching him.
"I did tell you about the fact that you are not delusional. Did I not?"
"You did, like it happens in the movies, where crazy people are convinced they are not crazy. The difference here is, if I go out there, I will damage stuff, and that really will only make you happy."
"Actually I think Theo would be overjoyed if you were to destroy this house. But he would be angry with me for having missed it."
Malfoy's contemplating tone had Harry snort again.
"Come now Potter, get dressed and let's see how much you remember from what you read."
Malfoy then suggested again.
"Why are you so insistent that I get out of this room? What do you want me to do?" Harry asked suspicious. Usually his delusions gave up after one try.
"I want you to fell less lonely, for the beginning. To see that life is going on, and that yours is too. You don't have to enjoy it, you... you just have to watch it, and be out of here for a while. How long have you been in here?"
For the first time Malfoy seemed rather unsure of what he was saying. Unsure was not something he imagined Malfoy even could be unsure... which would mean this was the real Malfoy in his real nightmare. Fuck!
"Look Potter, it's late night. Most of the people will have gone home. You read on how to focus and control, so you will be able to use it. And if all should go wrong I will stop it, and we come back and try it another time. But you have to get out of here."
He just stared at Malfoy. He wanted to go outside. It would be nice, even if it would be with Malfoy.
"Ok, but it is your fault when it goes wrong," he agreed after quite some time because this really seems like a bad idea. "I have no clothes though. My clothes are always provided when I need them, so..."
"Potter, houseelves you know about them." Malfoy sounded exasperated, before he made a small gesture with his fingers and a small, rather old houseelf popped in. "Bring some warm clothes for the Potter there please, so that he might not freeze in the snow," he said and the Elf disappeared. "Potter I will wait for you in the entrance hall, hurry up." With that he was gone, and he did shut the door from the outside.
"Finally" he was greeted when he stepped down the stairs. "After you," Malfoy pulled the door open and held it open for him.
Feeling very uneasy he stepped through the door. He took a careful look around, expecting things to happen just right then and there. But nothing did.
"Just don't wish for anything. alright? As long as the wild magic in you does not feel needed, or that you want something, we should be fine. And really after all this time inside, you should be happy enough just being outdoors again." Malfoy wrinkled his nose.
Carefully he stepped down the stairs and into the snow. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. The air around him was crisp and clean, and the snow felt wonderful. He did not mind the clouds in the sky or that it was night. He was outside. It was unbelievable.
"Thank you. Even if you turn out to be a delusion, and this all goes to hell. This moment was worth it."
"Potter, I am not a delusion. How often do I need to repeat myself. You do not have delusions. The wild magic in you simply tries to help in a very chaotic way. But for now let's not talk about that." Malfoy said and took a deep breath himself, before he stepped past him and down towards the gate.
He watched for four steps until he hurried to catch up with him.
"Where are we going?" He asked because he was actually interested.
"Just down the hill and through the town. I took a stroll through it yesterday and I am certain you will enjoy the Christmas cheer of the town."
Malfoy answered rather casually.
"You did a stroll through this town? Why?"
"Let's walk a little bit further and I will show you."
They walked in silence until they left the grounds of Nott's manor, and were already a little down the hill. The town was right below, and it sparkled below them. He couldn't help the excitement that grew in him.
"See that hill over there? You cannot see them in the darkness, but the Malfoy backyard gates are standing on top of them. Back when the Malfoys and the Notts settled here this town was a wizarding town. Now only muggles live here, and most of them want to go to bigger towns. Without the Malfoy and the Nott estates this town would have vanished a long time ago."
"How are your estates keeping the town afloat?" He asked disbelieving.
"For one our gatehouses are used as museums and rented out for weddings or movies, and people believe that in the Malfoy Gatehouse the actual Family lived. Well, all the drawings of the actual manor houses have been collected so they don't remember how big the manors are. We bring tourists here, we used to buy most of our groceries in town too, and with the gatehouse open to the public there are also jobs that have to be filled, so that it makes sense for the muggles."
He stared at Malfoy.
That made no fucking sense.
"When you are able to earn money from interaction with muggles why would you want them all gone? I mean your father must know that he gets money out of that."
"It never was about the muggles. Not really. It is about the muggle-born witches and the half-bloods growing up in the muggle world. They never learn about wizard tradition, and they do not bother to learn the reason for it, they just call it old fashioned and want to be done with it. But most of the things wizards do a certain way have certain reasons. Just because you can no longer see or feel the effect, doesn't mean that it's not there."
"I call bullshit on that one. You knew that Voldemort- stop flinching! it's just a fucking name - wanted to turn muggles into slaves or kill them."
"We should not be talking about this now. We are here so that you can enjoy the Christmas time. Testing my temper will shorten your outing." Malfoy ground the words out.
"Right. Sorry."
They walked in silence until they reached the town.
He was awed by the Christmas decorations hanging over the streets. And the town hall being decorated with light all over the building, showing of the interesting architecture of the building.
This was wonderful. He nearly forgot how much fun Christmas was.
"Look, look over there, there are small stands selling stuff. Come we must check them out."
In his excitement he didn't have a chance to worry about what would happen, he just enjoyed.
