Mother and I
With a sigh of relief Blaise entered his own room, and walked towards his fainting couch. For the first time, he understood the name, because he nearly fell on it.
He loved his mother. It was a weird love and came with being her son. He also, when he was honest to himself, knew he loved Severus, though he was not sure if he could describe what he really meant by that word.
But he was certain, that living with Severus and his mother was going to tire him out fast. They had a convoluted way of speaking, and they both were enjoying it so much that there was no stopping it.
It was exhausting. Maybe he could enjoy it on a good night of sleep, and if his body was not feeling so weird. Maybe it would also have helped if he hadn't been this shocked.
Apparently he was something akin to engaged now... and he couldn't help it, he was disappointed in how it all happened. This certainly was not what he had wanted.
"Are you all right?" Severus asked, stepping closer.
Blaise nodded. "Just tired. And, as I said, sleep is not the best right now, especially since you reduced the pink potion, though yes, I agree it helps with the eating."
Severus nodded before sitting down next to Blaise. "We should probably schedule another appointment with the healer anyway, just to make sure, that everything is alright."
Blaise nodded. "On the plus side, I did survive the breakfast, and so far everything is staying down."
"Your mother is quite a character."
Blaise snorted. "I would like to use this opportunity to say that I had warned you. I warned you this very morning."
"You misunderstand me, pet. I was not complaining, merely pointing out. Also, I did find myself quite entertained by our conversation," Severus replied.
Blaise put his arm over his eyes, and just sighed. "I am glad you enjoyed yourself, while my mother was out there planning our marriage."
"Will she plan the entire thing? Because i believe Narcissa might be cross with me if she doesn't get a say also. And I would prefer if Narcissa was not cross with me."
Blaise snorted again. That was Severus' biggest worry? If only there wasn't this bitterness... if only he knew that both he and Severus truly wanted this. But he would never know. His family had taken that from him.
There was a rustling of papers, but Blaise refuse to uncover his closed eyes.
"Your mother's research was quite extensive. She even found the Blood Curses of the Prince family."
Blaise moved his arm and opened his eyes then. He even sat up a bit before he spoke. "There are Blood Curses on your family? Anything the munchkin must be told?"
Severus shook his head at that. "I am sorry to tell you that your family is the only one I know that is crazy enough to put a Blood Curse on itself. However, apparently in the feudal times, one of the lords cursed my family, so that if they were ever to raise a sword against them, the wounds we inflicted on them, would be inflicted on all our descendants, which is actually quite an interesting approach. As the family that cursed the Prince family died out in the eighteen century, there is not that much to be feared," Severus told him.
"That is truly an interesting approach. It would guarantee the loyalty of all the generations, just to make sure not to die out, if the curse would strike immediately, as age is not part of it?"
"You think that they would need to reach the age of the victim? Or of majority?"
Blaise hummed. "If it were not for my family... well, it is presumed that most of the children are exonerated from Blood Curses, until they become a full fledged member of the family, which would mean the age of seventeen. On the other hand, it would also make sense to act on the age of the victim, because it is when he received the injury, and it states that all the injuries should be recreated," Blaise theorised.
"I should not be surprised that you know about the rules behind Blood Curses, but I find I am."
"I did some research for the Curse-Breakers once. It was interesting. I think it got me into spell creation, which led me to wand making. I had plenty of discussions with old Ollivander. It is sad he doesn't staff the shop any longer, because his son lacks the same appreciation for the theory behind it."
"So he is still alive?"
"As far as I know, he is still the one working in their grove, selecting the woods. Maybe he tries to hang on until his son grows into appreciation for the art?"
"Considering your fascination with any other topic, can I presume you hope that we will talk about the wedding another day?"
Blaise blushed as he was caught. He thought he did a decent job, but then again Severus knew him well enough.
"Maybe once my mother is gone?" he asked hopefully.
Severus looked at him, one eyebrow raised in surprise. "You are aware that she might stay here until after the wedding?"
Blaise struggled to get up, but finally sat next to Severus. "Let's hope not. She will be insufferable after a week."
Severus looked at Blaise. "What is it between you and your mother? You always say you love her in your own way. I know you do defend her sometimes, and you hardly ever join the jokes but you also don't stop them. And then you say things like 'she will be insufferable after a week'?"
Blaise shrugged. "She is my mother. I am not sure she wanted to be a mother at the time, or at all, and she certainly never was the cuddle-type, but she always was there for me, in a way, and mostly did all right by me. Still, being her child does not exonerate me of seeing her faults. She is a femme fatale. And the fact that the potion has its flaws, is proof that she lied to me. I can accept that, I can love her, in my own way, and I can still be annoyed by her. Furthermore, I can be clever enough not to cross her," Blaise said leaning back again.
It was hard for Blaise to speak about his relationship with his mother, because it was just as he said. There never had been a major conflict between him and his mother. He stayed out of her way, and followed the family rules, and she was there for him, when he asked her for it. Though, so far he had never really had a need to. He liked to think that this would hold true.
As many may point out, that it was due to her behaviour, that Blaise never had a father figure, but he would argue that point. First when he was younger there had been husbands around who liked him and took him in. Second, his mother made sure he was able to spend a lot of time with Draco and his parents. And though he was not Draco's brother, they took him in.
The fact that he knew not to cross his mother wasn't even learned by experience but by witnessing what happened to those who did.
That was just how it was, and people seldom accepted that. They wanted to know why and expected some deep reason. But there was none.
Blaise shrugged again, and looked at Severus, wanting to see his reaction.
Severus nodded once. "I see. And I shall heed your advice and try not to cross her. However even my patience has limits, and there are some things I won't accept."
Blaise nodded in reply. What was he supposed to say? To him, the marriage was already over the line. But as it was his family's fault, and his child and his life which were in danger, he felt like he had no right to complain. But what if Severus came to resent him in the future? They had never even discussed marriage so far, and now they would marry in three or four weeks?
Blaise sighed and leaned back a bit more, trying to relax his back. "Luckily for us though, she will get bored within three days, and be gone again. Especially considering that mother dislikes the English Yule customs and usually goes to France, Switzerland, or Italy to celebrate there. She might come back with more wedding planning done, but she might not do it here," he said.
"We should arrange for Narcissa to come over, before your mother leaves. I was not joking, she would be quite cross with me, if I were to exclude her from the wedding preparations," Severus replied.
Blaise was thankful that he did not comment on the likelihood of his mother not joining them for Christmas this year, because even Blaise had doubts he would get this lucky.
Blaise nodded and sighed again. "For the moment, let's just be relieved, that apparently you will inherit the Prince title instead, which is quite impressive, and that your friends are as powerful in high society as they are." Blaise already felt exhausted, but imagining if things were different made the situation mildly bearable.
"Come pet, you will have a short lie down, while I go to write some letters." As Severus spoke he offered his hand to help Blaise up.
