It already turned dark again when Harry finally had to concede that he would not see Draco today. It wasn’t that surprising, because Draco always mentions when to expect him next before he leaves, but it was still disappointing. He had hoped that Draco would still show up to do something together.
With careful steps he made to leave his rooms. He felt weird being all alone in the house of someone else. On the one hand it would be so interesting to snoop around and find out how a pure-blood manor works, but on the other hand he could not break the trust that Theo granted him, by taking him in. So he just went down to the cosy looking salon and sat down by the fire there. Everything was better than being in the same room all the time. He just had to be careful, keeping his occlumency strong and staying calm.
He picked up one of the books that lay by the table and, with a heavy sigh, started to read it. This was where boredom led him, reading a non-quidditch related book. Soon he can be found reading Hogwarts a History and then what will become of him?
“There you are,” Theo said as he entered the room, taking the seat opposite from Harry.
“I hope it isn’t a problem? I just got bored, and I didn’t want to risk going outside without Draco around. I did nothing exciting, though wizarding stories are far more interesting than muggle ones,” Harry replied. The relief that there was someone to talk to was obvious in his voice.
“It wasn’t meant as a accusation. I went to your room and you were gone. I was wondering if Draco maybe too you out again,” Theo said, eyebrow raised.
“He did not. Haven’t see him all day. He didn’t even write an owl or something,” Harry huffed. “I’m honestly not sure if he was more annoying in school or now. How come you haven’t killed him in all those years?” He knew it was a lame joke, but then given the closeness of the two estates Theo must know Draco for a really long time. And for him to make a battle plan, he had simply needed more information. He knew quite a bit of the school Draco: habits, behaviour patterns, the way he tries to manipulate situations and the like. But he knew nothing about this older Draco, though clearly he must not have changed that much given Pansy’s and Theo’s reaction to him during their small gathering.
“He is quicker than he looks and seldom lets his guard down. In first year a sixth year student tried to make fun of him, because he was short-ish. He hexed that poor bastard something fierce. In hindsight he might simply have read the magic- listened to it... you need to be careful, and I mean that sincerely. Draco Malfoy is not a harmless man, it is not in his blood or his upbringing to be so.”
“What are you saying? That he would do something to me? But you guys brought him here to help me, and now you tell me I can’t trust him?” Harry was confused.
“I didn’t say that. He is... capable of doing good, and he certainly has the ability and the knowledge to back up whatever he tries to do- he would be made an unspeakable if he wished for it to be so. The Ministry would offer him a lot to have him in their clutches for many reasons-“
“You talk like you want to use him and blame him for wanting to what- use me?”
Harry truly was astonished that Theo would talk that way about Draco. He had seen their shared glances, the small gestures, a secret language developed over years of togetherness. And now it sounded like Theo was warning him off?
“You are not listening, you are implying-“
“You are talking around something that you either don’t want me to know, or something you don’t know yourself. Makes me wonder why you would bring it up. You can only hope I know what you want to know or you hope I figure out what you mean. We both know I will never be able to figure out what you mean if you don’t want me to. So what is it you want to know?”
Theo stared at him for long minutes before there was a slow smile escaping his lips.” I wouldn’t say you are not clever enough to figure it out, you simply are too lazy,” he mumbled.
