hphet's first prompt "Happy New Year"; just a slice of life written on the new years day
High Hopes
With a soft sigh she leans into her husband's side. It's the first time since the dinner that she is sitting at all.
It wouldn't have to be, she knows that better than anyone: six sons and one daughter all well raised and of course capable of helping her. If she would only let them.
She is well aware that she is known to be overbearing, and a mother hen or a lioness, who even roars at her own children.
She had such high hopes for her children. And now where were they?
Her oldest married to a hussy, even if they have an adorable daughter now, that French women is in no way good enough for her oldest son!
The next not interested in anything that is not dragon-shaped. It's not for a lack of her trying, but he just wasn't interested.
The one after that... well, at least he is speaking with his brothers once more, and he comes for Christmas. Though he doesn't speak about anything outside of work.
The remaining twin is something that still aches in her. She tries to hide it, but seeing only one of them were there have been two- it's an ache nobody could ever understand. Like nobody is able to understand the pain of her son. It's the worst about everything, she is helpless towards his pain. Having to endure seeing him with that boy is the biggest affront in her life yet.
How could such a mean spirited boy even worm his way into the heart of her cleverest son? Coming from such a family! And seeing them being cosy with each other, exchanging simple touches, ignoring those around them, as if they don't already spend enough time together!
She doesn't like it!
And then her youngest boy, an auror now. Putting himself in danger every day. How is a mother come to rest, when her children refuse to stay safe. She is proud of him, of course. But she would prefer if he settled down, start a family, becomes a dad. Now the girl is gone, and he only talks about someone he is seeing. She is certain that at least his older brother and that snake of his know something, but nobody tells her! She doesn't like it!
And her baby girl... oh, how her heart breaks for her. Six children before she could get her beautiful girl. She had already heard the marriage bells when finally her adoptive son and she started to date. At least she would be safe and happy. But even those hopes weren't meant to come true: her adoptive son dates the strangest girl she ever has met, and her daughter has settled for the other war hero. A timid boy, good willed and mellow. He will never be able to endure her fiery nature. And as for her carrier: a quidditch player!
She first feared that her twins would go and play that deathly sport, but they went into business instead. And now she has to watch her only daughter! Every game another death thread.
With such woes, how could she not be a mother hen? Her family has endured so much. She just wants the best for them, and she fears that they don't get it, that they all settle for too little when they deserve so much more.
"We have a very happy family. We did a good job." Her husband murmurs and takes her hand, as if he has read her thoughts.
"You believe that?" she has to asks.
"I know that, and if something goes wrong, we will be here to fix it."
She smiles at him. He is such a good man! Not the rich man her mother envisioned for her, but the best man she could ever have hoped for. So maybe not all is lost...
With a small smile she kisses him: "Happy new year, dear."
