For Ever
It was the late hours of the night before Yule. In a few hours the sun would rise and enter the path of the Solstice and Draco could feel his nerves already. It was the final ritual.
They had their official wedding three years ago, with friends and families, and it had been beautiful. But on the night of last new years eve, Harry had asked for him to agree to enter a magical soul bound with him.
Draco had given up on entering such a bond a long time ago. They were not done anymore, as divorce would no longer be an option. Even if you come to hate your bond-mate. you would have to continue living him with. It was not only the promise of being there forever, but binding magic that made you be there forever.
Funnily enough his mother had disagreed on being witness to their bond, and Harry did not dare ask his friends, because they would not understand.
So it was his father who had witnessed the forming of the bond, because a caster and witness was needed for this kind of magic.
They exchanged vows of love, loyalty and forever on Imbolc.
They washed each other with the fresh water of a spring they discovered on Ostara.
They made love in the fires of Beltane.
They confessed the burdens of their souls, and the shadows of their hearts to each other on the night of the never ending sun, Litha.
They cut down one old Holly tree and one old Hawthorn tree, and planted new ones closer together on Lughnasadh.
They wandered into a foreign wood from two different sites and found themselves there on Mabon.
They introduced each other to their family members long passed on Samhain.
And now they would dance, and with each step their bond would be woven, by their magic, the witness his father stood, and the power of the sun and the moon. Each step would make it stronger. But the dance was not easy, and they had to do it outside, so that the sun could see them.
Draco trusted Harry more than himself, because the both knew the steps, but Harry had stamina that Draco knew he lacked, and they needed to be in synch, like on all those events before. But if the failed tonight they could never retake it.
And Draco wanted it so, so badly. But in his life he had really been granted what he truly wanted, most of the time due to his own faults.
“It is time, son. Harry is already waiting.”
“I’m not sure I can do this,” Draco said, afraid of taking just one step, afraid of the future, afraid of disappointing Harry, and himself. What if they had to stop before their bond was strong, and they would end up tied together with nothing but the fact that they had to stay together?
“There is nothing to be afraid of. I watched you, both of you, through all these difficult rituals, that had you both in the throws of sorrow, longing, lust and happiness. You have been granted the blessings of the moon, your magic is so compatible that nobody can have a doubt that you belong together, and as I stood witness, I already felt the bond. you are not forming it today, you are only announcing it, so that those who know what to look for, so that the old magic, knows what you two share is more than just a vow,” Lucius said.
Draco looked at his father, his father whom he had loved, hated and loathed. His father who never liked seeing him with Harry, but who said nothing, because Draco would have left the family there and then. His father who knew him better than anybody else, except for Harry, who was waiting for him.
“Do you think- Am I ready for this? I wished for it, but now that it’s nearly there, I am afraid that it is not everything I hoped for,” Draco spoke softly.
“It will not be everything you hoped for. it will have it’s short comings, because you will be tied to Harry for the rest of your life, and you will share your soul and magic with him,” Lucius said, and Draco could already feel the frown on his face forming. “And at the same time it will be so much more than you ever dared to hope for, because you will be tied to Harry for the rest of your life, and you will share your soul with him”, Lucius continued.
Draco nodded once. Yes, they both have their failings, but they are better of together than alone.
“I’m ready,” Draco said to himself or his father, it mattered not. He stepped out of the small tent, and into the opening.
Around them trees stood covered in ice, and the air was crisp and clean. The grounds were covered in snow, but Draco did not feel cold, as he was looking at the man he was soon going to be a soulmate to.
They shared a secret smile, and then it all came together even easier than when they were practicing.
Draco glided into Harry’s arms, Harry held him strong, and then they did the first step, while never dropping their gaze from each other.
And as the sun rose higher and higher, their steps quickened, but never faltered.
For ever, for real, no take backs.
It was not going to be easy, they already knew this, neither was it going to be perfect, because they were not perfect, but it was what they needed and wanted. A home without walls or evidence, because they were home to each other.
